  • Amber marks roads riders have described by riding them.
  • A road appears the first time anyone rides it, and is drawn more strongly as more riders travel it.
  • Dark roads do not have published readings yet.
  • This view draws described roads. The full map adds the coverage wash and the road hazard findings, with counts for each.

We map the roads we ride.

Amber is a road someone has already described, because they rode it at a safe speed with Tranna running. Dark is a road nobody has described yet. Most of India is dark.

The app records roads as you ride. The map is here on the web, open to read.

What is Tranna?

Tranna is a road health map of India, built out of everyday journeys. We ride the roads we already ride with the app running, and the phone records what the surface underneath is like — where it is rough, where it is broken, where it holds steady. Enough rides over the same stretch and the road can be described properly.

That description goes onto a public map. We publish roads, not journeys.

    Ride, don't report

You ride the roads you already ride, with the app running in the background. No form, no photo, no button to press when you hit a hazard.

  • 02 / 04

    The phone reads the road

Motion from the ride shows where the surface is rough, where it is broken and where it holds steady. It reads the road, not the rider.

  • 03 / 04

    Roads reach a public map

Enough rides over a stretch and the road is described, then published on our website and used for analysis.

  • 04 / 04

It sharpens as more people ride

More rides over the same road raise how confident the map is about it. Coverage grows, and the picture gets closer to the ground.

Step 1 of 4: Ride, don't report

Why we started.

Every map we use answers one question well: how do we get there fastest. None of them can tell us what the road is actually like.

Road condition is only recorded when a road is surveyed, and most roads are never surveyed. What data exists sits across different departments, is often years old, and is not public. Meanwhile the people who ride a road every day know exactly where it breaks. That knowledge is real, it is current, and it has nowhere to go.

Who this is for.

Anyone who rides the same roads often enough to know them, and anyone who is about to ride one they do not.

  • 01 / 08

    Carrying someone who needs care

Driving family to and from treatment, or a parent to a monthly appointment. The road matters more than the distance.

  • 02 / 08

    Daily commuters

The same route hundreds of times a year. Small differences in surface compound into real wear.

  • 03 / 08

    Professional drivers and riders

Delivery, cabs, logistics. They cover more road in a week than most of us do in a year, and describe the most of it.

  • 04 / 08

    Riding alone, or after dark

When there is nobody to help and less to see.

  • 05 / 08

    Long-distance and leisure riders

Weekend rides and road trips, where the point is the ride itself and a bad surface ruins it.

  • 06 / 08

    New to the area

Visitors and recent arrivals, riding roads locals already know to avoid.

  • 07 / 08

    School and family runs

Short, repeated, with passengers who feel every jolt.

  • 08 / 08

    Elderly riders

For whom a rough road is not an inconvenience but a genuine barrier.

Segment 1 of 8: Carrying someone who needs care

When do we need it?

Where Tranna is going, not what it does today. Each scene is a decision the map could help with once enough roads are described.

  • 01 / 04

Faster is not always what we need

One of us will need to reach a hospital in time and will want to know which is the safer road — not the shorter one. On those drives, the condition of the road matters more than the length of it.

  • 02 / 04

    Riding home, eleven at night

The route that we know and ride at 6pm is not the road we see at 11pm. Tranna would be able to say which stretches are consistently smooth and consistently safe to use after dark, because that is what the data would show.

  • 03 / 04

    Travelling alone

Most of us have two ways to get somewhere and quietly prefer one, without being able to say exactly why. Usually it is a few minutes slower and it does not rattle everything loose. That preference is real information, and right now it lives in our heads.

  • 04 / 04

A city you do not know

Every place has a road that looks fine on a map and is broken on the ground. The people who ride there daily know. The rest of us learn it the hard way, once, and remember it forever. That knowledge exists — it is not written down anywhere.

Scene 1 of 4: Faster is not always what we need

None of this exists today. This is built for tomorrow.
